Forts is a real-time strategy base-building game with ‘Very Positive’ user reviews on Steam, and it’s currently free to play. The promotion is a great opportunity for fans of the genre to check out Forts, which has been refining its gameplay on Steam since 2017.

There are plenty of popular games on Steam that feature base building as a core mechanic, such as RimWorld, Subnautica, and Satisfactory. Most of these, however, focus heavily on survival as the driving philosophy behind constructing bases. Forts, by contrast, emphasizes real-time strategic and tactical combat.

Forts Is Free to Play on Steam Until September 1

Right now, a Free Weekend promotion on Steam lets fans play both the multiplayer and campaign of Forts at no cost. The promotion runs until September 1, giving players enough time to finish the campaign and enjoy plenty of multiplayer matches. Forts is normally priced at around $15 USD, so the free-to-play offer is a great chance to try it before committing. Even better, those who choose to buy it after the promo can get it at a 50% discount for a limited time.

The multiplayer aspect of Forts is one of its biggest draws. It features a 1v1 mode where two players face off in RTS combat to destroy each other’s strongholds. There’s also a mode that supports up to seven players in chaotic, action-packed matches, making it a fun party game to play with friends. The best part is that the current Free Weekend promo lets non-owners try all these modes for themselves, along with the Quick Battle, Skirmish, and Sandbox modes. In Sandbox mode, players can freely build unique bases and experiment with different features without facing opponents. It’s a great way for newcomers to learn the mechanics and prepare for real battles.

Forts will soon release its third major DLC, Firebird, which will introduce a brand-new origin story. It will also add new maps, commanders, and weapons, further expanding the core base-building elements of the game. It’s worth noting that Forts‘ DLCs are usually paid additions, typically priced between $5 and $8 USD.

The free-to-play promotion for Forts isn’t the only great deal for PC users right now. Until August 29, Steam users can claim Dead in Bermuda for free. Anyone who grabs this unique survival game before the deadline can keep it forever with no strings attached. August 28 also marks the last chance for Epic Games Store users to claim the current free-to-keep games, Strange Horticulture and Kamaeru, before they are removed from the platform.
