Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been updated to version 1.2.0 on Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch. Released in 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the most recent 2D game to feature Nintendo’s mustachioed mascot. After multiple entries in the New Super Mario Bros. series, Nintendo took things in a different direction. Super Mario Bros. Wonder still offered the same classic platforming that has been a staple of the franchise since 1985, but the developers at Nintendo EPD were able to incorporate several new elements that helped the game feel fresh and original.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder added several new power-ups to the franchise, including the Elephant Fruit and Bubble Flower. While many of the New Super Mario Bros. games felt interchangeable, this helped give the Nintendo Switch game its own distinct identity. Super Mario Bros. Wonder‘s Elephant power-up quickly became a fan favorite, resulting in lots of new merchandise. On top of new power-ups and enemies, the game’s improved animation also helped to distinguish Super Mario Bros. Wonder from previous games. The developers added more fluid movements for Mario and the rest of the game’s characters, making the visual style feel closer to what had been seen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A New Nintendo Switch 2 Console Model is Coming, But There’s a Catch

Less than a year after launch, a new version of Nintendo Switch 2 is coming, but not everyone will be able to get their hands on it.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been updated to version 1.2.0. This update for Super Mario Bros. Wonder should pave the way for the game’s Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park is now available, and it adds a bunch of new content to the game. The majority of the new content focuses around multiplayer modes, though there is some new single-player content in the form of conflicts with the Koopalings. The Nintendo Switch 2 update also adds a new power-up on top of those introduced in the base game, and it makes Rosalina and Luma playable. The upgrade is not actually included in the new update though, and Nintendo Switch 2 owners will have to pay $19.99 for the extra content. A physical version has also been released, for those that did not purchase Super Mario Bros. Wonder on the original Switch.

In a surprising move, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder features cameos by Pikmin characters. The game is set in the Flower Kingdom, so it makes a bit of sense to see Pikmin appearing in a crossover, at least from a design standpoint. However, this came as a pretty big surprise to Nintendo fans when it was revealed in a recent trailer. It’s likely this is just a small crossover, but it’s a neat detail for fans of both Mario and Pikmin. The Pikmin games have never seen nearly the same level of success as Mario, but this type of cameo might get players interested in learning more about the characters. It might even convince a few to check out some of the Pikmin games available on Switch and Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 update for Super Mario Bros. Wonder is clearly designed to take advantage of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s release in theaters on April 1. New content for a well-regarded game has been a winning formula for Nintendo since the Switch 2 generation began, but Mario fans can’t help but wish for a new 3D game starring the character. Rumors suggest a 3D Mario game for Nintendo Switch 2 is in the works, but Nintendo has yet to confirm it. Hopefully, Nintendo won’t keep fans waiting too long to find out what’s being planned for the second half of 2026.
