Magic: The Gathering’s new expansion, Edge of Eternities, is charting new territory with its cosmic setting and innovative mechanics. Set to release on August 1, 2025, players leave the familiar planes of the Multiverse into the mysterious Sothera system, where alien factions wage war among distant planets and dying stars. Below is a concise breakdown of every officially revealed card so far in Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming expansion.

The 30 Rarest Magic: The Gathering Cards (And How Much They’re Worth)

Magic: The Gathering has some of the rarest, most valuable cards of any TCG, and collectors are still tripping over themselves to find these pieces.

Cards Coming to Magic: The Gathering in Edge of Eternities

    Planeswalker Spotlight: Tezzeret, Cruel Captain

The most significant reveal is Tezzeret, Cruel Captain, a colorless planeswalker that dramatically departs from previous iterations. Costing three generic mana and starting with four loyalty counters, he features a unique passive ability that gains loyalty whenever artifacts enter the battlefield under player control.

His three abilities showcase his mastery over artifacts:

    • A zero-loyalty ability untaps target artifacts or creatures and places +1/+1 counters on artifact creatures.
    • A minus-three ability searches the library for artifacts with mana value one or less, offering powerful tutoring for staples like Sol Ring or Moxes.
    • His ultimate minus-seven creates an emblem that transforms artifacts into continuously buffed Robot creatures.

In addition to these abilities, Tezzeret’s colorless allows him to slot into any artifact-running deck. His high loyalty and ability mean he can potentially activate his ultimate on the turn he enters play with sufficient artifact support. This status quo makes him particularly powerful in formats like Vintage and Legacy, with cheap artifacts abound.

    New Artifact Type: Spacecraft

Edge of Eternities introduces spacecraft as a new artifact subtype —similar to vehicles but with unique mechanics. The Seriema’s “station” ability is an example of this, where tapping creatures increases charge counters to keep the spacecraft as a creature.

Most significantly, spacecraft, alongside existing legendary vehicles, can now function as commanders in the Commander format, broadening deck-building possibilities and establishing new archetypes.

This pivotal rule change is highlighted by two spacecraft serving as face commanders for the set’s Commander decks, demonstrating Wizards’ commitment to this innovative card type across formats.

    Legendary Creatures and Commanders

    • Sami, Ship’s Engineer
    • Szarel, Genesis Shepherd
    • Kilo, Apogee Mind

Several legendary creatures showcase the set’s themes of sacrifice, artifact synergy, and cosmic power. Among them is Sami, a 2/4 Human Artificer for four mana, representing the story’s human element. Her ability triggers at the end of each turn when two or more tapped creatures are controlled, creating 2/2 Robot artifact creature tokens.

Szarel, the legendary creature and Jund commander, allows players to play lands from their graveyard while converting sacrificed permanents into +1/+1 counters based on their power. The design encourages a lands-matter strategy that can generate significant value through sacrifice synergies.

Kilo, Apogee Mind represents another commander option designed around counter manipulation. While full details remain limited, early deck lists suggest this commander focuses on loyalty counter manipulation and artifact synergies.

The Set’s Centerpiece: Sothera, the Supervoid

The most ambitious card revealed to date is Sothera, the Supervoid, the set’s headline chase card. This mythic legendary enchantment costs four mana (two black, two colorless) and establishes a powerful engine based on creature sacrifice. When a creature dies, each opponent must choose one of their creatures to exile.

The payoff occurs at the end step: if no player controls creatures, Sothera is sacrificed. In the aftermath, an exiled creature can then return to play under its controller’s command with two additional +1/+1 counters.

Sothera appears in multiple special treatments, including a rare textless version that captures the majesty of its supermassive black hole, emphasizing its significance as both a gameplay centerpiece and a showcase of Edge of Eternities’ cosmic aesthetic.

    Shock Land Reprints

Edge of Eternities brings five enemy-colored shock lands (Godless Shrine, Breeding Pool, Stomping Ground, Watery Grave, Sacred Foundry) back to Standard for the first time since 2019. While only half the cycle appears, their absence suggests future reprints of allied-colored versions. These reprints are also valuable for Commander and Modern players, potentially impacting the secondary market for these staples.

    Special Treatments and Collectibles

Borderless triumphant cards feature major characters in post-battle scenes, with Tezzeret being a prime example of this treatment. Borderless celestial basic lands bring space-themed artwork to fundamental game pieces, available in both traditional foil and non-foil versions. The return of galaxy foil treatment adds another layer of collectibility, appearing exclusively in Collector Boosters alongside other premium treatments. The set also features borderless poster stellar sights cards that capture the grandeur of the Sothera system’s cosmic vistas.

Ultimately, Edge of Eternities represents a crucial juncture for Magic: The Gathering, as the title ventures into uncharted thematic territory. Its performance will be a significant barometer for future design directions, potentially opening doors to more diverse settings beyond the traditional Multiverse. As the season progresses, the anticipation for this ambitious set underscores its potential to leave a lasting impact on how Magic evolves.
