During an interview with the New York Times, Naughty Dog’s own Neil Druckmann was candid about the supposed fatigue and oversaturation of The Last of Us franchise, further confirming how difficult it had been for the studio to keep quiet about Intergalactic.

Now that Intergalactic has been officially announced, Naughty Dog should be able to address this and find a new balance between The Last of Us and the upcoming release of its new IP. As hinted at by Druckmann’s comments, with Naughty Dog preparing to break its silence after working on Intergalactic in secret, players could expect to hear more about the upcoming sci-fi IP in 2025.
Why Intergalactic Fans Shouldn’t Expect Another Trailer or Release Date in 2025
While players might want to see and learn more about Intergalactic following its reveal, it will potentially be some time before Naughty Dog confirms or showcases anything more substantial about the new game. With Intergalactic having supposedly been in development since 2020 after the release of The Last of Us Part 2, the game may be close to being complete and ready for launch. However, based on past development trends with Naughty Dog games, the official release date of Intergalactic could still be a year or more away.
For instance, The Last of Us Part 2 began development in 2014, was announced in 2016, and then released in 2020, a timeframe which included Druckmann declining to confirm the game’s release date during 2018’s E3 until the studio felt it was close to launch. With this in mind, players shouldn’t expect Intergalactic to get a release date in 2025, nor should they expect another trailer as this could be too soon for Naughty Dog and misleading to waiting fans. However, while Intergalactic may not get any big announcements in 2025, Naughty Dog can still build hype throughout the year with smaller updates.
Smaller Intergalactic Updates From Naughty Dog Are More Likely in 2025
Since Naughty Dog has already revealed plenty about Intergalactic such as its protagonist, Sempiria setting, and robot enemies, there’s still much to learn about its characters, features, and content. For instance, beyond Naughty Dog’s comments about Intergalactic‘s story, it could reveal more throughout the year about its possible gameplay, like how Intergalactic‘s signature laser swords and possessed-looking robots will factor into the game’s combat. Alternatively, if Naughty Dog wants to hold back on official details, it could still release concept art or background lore about Intergalactic during 2025.
