The Mercedes-AMG GT XX Just Obliterated 25 Records

The Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept, which previews the German brand’s upcoming four-door production EV, just obliterated several distance records for electric cars, chief amongst which is the 24-hour challenge.

The sleek electric four-door sedan with Bluetooth-controlled aero wings traveled no fewer than 3,405 miles (5,479 kilometers) in 24 hours. That’s 943 miles (1,518 km) more than the previous record set by the XPeng P7 earlier this month.

A pair of concepts drove the equivalent of the circumference of the Earth in less than eight days.

The car was driven at a constant 186 miles per hour, stopping only to recharge at an equally impressive 850 kilowatts of power. This enabled the electric concept car to power on relentlessly, day after day and night after night.

A team of 17 drivers, including F1 driver George Russell, took turns behind the wheel in two-hour shifts, driving for nearly eight days straight. At the end of the grueling test run this morning, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX managed to drive the equivalent of the circumference of the Earth in record time: 24,901 miles (40,075 km) in 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 7 seconds. To top it all off, not one but two GT XX EVs finished the task with just two laps between them.

But the team kept driving the pair of EVs until it passed the 25,000-mile marker, setting a new benchmark of 7 days, 14 hours, 9 minutes and 52 seconds. Along the way, no fewer than 25 records were set, including for the longest distance driven in 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 hours. The tables below show the scope of AMG’s efforts, and they’re truly impressive.

Yes, this is a concept car we’re talking about here, but it’s one that’s likely very similar to the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT four-door coupe. In other words, this sort of performance is to be expected when the series model hits the streets. Furthermore, as time goes on, cheaper Mercedes-Benz models are sure to benefit from the technology that enabled the German automaker to make such a splash with the AMG GT XX.

Powered by three oil-cooled Yasa axial flux electric motors, the orange electric concept car makes a little over 1,360 horsepower. The motors, two at the rear and one at the front, are integrated into high-performance electric drive units. At the rear, the two drive units are paired with compact gearboxes and one inverter each in a single housing, while the front electric drive acts as a booster and is only activated when needed. In other words, the electric concept car is predominantly rear-wheel drive.

The battery of the AMG GT XX is also quite special. It features newly developed cylindrical nickel cobalt manganese aluminum (NCMA) cells that offer an energy density of 300 watt-hours/kilogram. The whole pack contains over 3,000 cells, and the temperature of each cell can be directly regulated by a non-conductive oil cooling system. All of this, coupled with the pack’s rated voltage of over 800V, means the GT XX can accept over 850 kW of power when connected to a potent enough DC fast charger, making light work of recharges on long road trips.

According to Mercedes-AMG, the sleek four-door EV can get roughly 248 miles of range in just five minutes of charging. That should eliminate range anxiety and charge anxiety, shouldn’t it?
