This Is What The Lucid Gravity Looks Like As An Off-Roader

    • Lucid unveiled its first concept vehicle on Thursday, the Gravity X.
    • It’s a rugged take on the Gravity, which is the EV startup’s first SUV.
    • The design features knobby tires, a modular roof rack system and a redesigned front and rear.

If America’s two leading electric vehicle startups had a baby, it might look a lot like the Lucid Gravity X. This concept, unveiled on Thursday at Monterey Car Week, brings some Rivian ruggedness to Lucid’s new SUV.

The Gravity X started off life as a Gravity Grand Touring, Lucid’s SUV with 450 miles of EPA-estimated range, 828 horsepower and seating for you and six friends. The Gravity is probably the best all-around electric vehicle you can buy, as I learned during my recent test drive. But it lacks the brawny look and chunky tires that so many Americans love.

The Gravity X changes that, reimagining the sleek SUV as a dirt-churning off-roader. And, yeah, I think Lucid should probably make it.

So what’s new in the Gravity X? It’s slightly lifted, and its custom wheels—wrapped in knobby tires—are set farther apart. Skid plates aim to protect the Gravity’s undercarriage from pointy rocks, and built-in tow hooks may help it get out of a jam.

The front and rear fascias have been reworked to provide more aggressive approach and departure angles—so you can scale up or climb down steeper inclines. Plus, Lucid fitted a “modular roof system” up top that includes crossbars, LED light bars, a roof box and mounts for additional gear.

Design-wise, the Gravity X features topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley that are etched into its hood. And the exterior’s orange accents are carried through to piping on the seats.

Now look, you and I know that if Lucid made this, it probably wouldn’t see a lick of dirt. That’s how it goes with about 99% of the Mercedes G-Wagens, Land Rovers and Rivians out there. But this lifted, off-road minivan sure would stand out the mall parking lot, and I bet it could rack up some numbers.

Should Lucid actually put the Gravity X into production? Would you buy one? What changes does it need? Let us know in the comments!
