Windows 10 support is set to end on October 14, 2025. This change affects millions of PC users in India, who now face a decision. They can either purchase updates for Windows 10 or upgrade to a new Windows 11 PC. Microsoft acknowledges the impact of this transition, which may leave users vulnerable if they continue using Windows 10 without updates.
Microsoft has outlined options for those affected by the end of Windows 10 support. Users can extend their support through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, costing $30 (approximately Rs 2,550) for one year. However, the exact cost for Indian users remains unclear. Alternatively, Microsoft offers a free update method by redeeming 1000 Microsoft Reward points or backing up data to the Windows Backup cloud app.

Free Update Options and Challenges
To earn these reward points, users need a Microsoft account and must engage in activities like using Bing for web searches, shopping at the Microsoft Store, playing Xbox games, and completing other tasks. Although this process seems straightforward, accumulating 1000 points requires significant effort before the October deadline.
Many people still rely on Windows 10 due to its familiarity and functionality. Microsoft’s initial plans faced resistance because upgrading to a Windows 11 PC can be costly, especially with the latest hardware. Therefore, paying a nominal fee to extend Windows 10 support allows users to continue using their systems until market prices become more affordable.
Microsoft’s Strategy and User Concerns
The company has shared detailed information about these changes in an official post. Yusuf Mehdi from Microsoft stated that once users select an option and follow on-screen steps, their PCs will automatically enroll in ESU coverage from October 15, 2025, through October 13, 2026.
Despite Microsoft’s efforts to provide alternatives, many users remain hesitant about these options. The notion of “no free lunches” resonates with them as they weigh the benefits against potential drawbacks of opting for free updates or paid extensions.
This transition period highlights the challenges faced by both Microsoft and its user base as they navigate changing technology landscapes. While some may choose to upgrade immediately, others might prefer extending support until they are ready for new hardware investments.
The end of Windows 10 support marks a significant shift in how PC users manage their systems. As deadlines approach and decisions loom large over millions across India-and beyond-individuals must carefully consider their next steps amidst evolving technological demands.
