Jaguar is one of those automotive brands whose heritage precedes it. But it hasn’t been doing so great in the last 20 years. Now, it’s rebranding itself and moving upmarket into Bentley territory, with a new product designed to shock and impress upscale buyers.
The Type 00 is a large electric fastback/sedan set to arrive in 2026. It was previewed by a low-slung coupe concept with a hood large enough to double as a tennis court. The concept’s unusual design was complemented by a strange ad campaign that made it unclear whether Jaguar was announcing a new car or its entry into the world of haute couture fashion.
Jaguar showed a camouflaged prototype of its upcoming four-door from multiple angles, and based on this, I created what I think is a fairly accurate side view rendering depicting the future production model. Its proportions will be slightly toned down from the concept, but it will look like nothing else—this thing will turn heads like Tesla Cybertrucks did when they first started appearing on the road.
The production four-door EV keeps the concept’s extra-long hood, which has been a staple of ultra-luxury cars for over a century. Even though there’s no need for it with no traditional Jag V-12 under the hood, the car was designed this way specifically to drive the point home that it’s a symbol of opulent cutting-edge personal transport with its eye on old-world luxury.
We recently got a better look at a camouflaged prototype as it did its rounds somewhere in Spain. NCars posted a video showing a Type 00 driving on some backroads and it looks just as outrageous as we thought it would. The long nose is still there, but the front axle is set further back than in the concept, giving it more front overhang.
The greenhouse is also taller than the concept’s, but it has quite a dramatic sloping roofline that gives the car a fastback aesthetic. Jaguar went to extra lengths to hide the shape of the rear part of the roof, and it even installed what is probably a fake ducktail spoiler to fool onlookers. This car most likely won’t have such a fixed aero element on the back—it would look out of place—but it could have an active rear wing that rises at speed like on the F-Type sports car.
Whether Jaguar’s upmarket rebranding and rebirth will succeed remains to be seen. It certainly got plenty of attention for its marketing campaign, with a lot of angry feedback. But it might just be crazy enough to work if it attracts a new generation of ultra-luxury buyers.
