Sentenced to Be a Hero deconstructs the hero trope in anime by featuring Xylo Forbartz, a hero with many lives and incredible abilities but devoid of people’s praise. Instead of honoring Xylo’s name, they look down on him. That unique take is one reason to watch Sentenced to Be a Hero this 2026 winter season.
Every New Isekai Anime Announced For 2026
2026 will be filled with otherworldly adventures, as the year is packed with isekai anime that will strive to entertain or bemuse audiences.
So far, Sentenced to Be a Hero is one of the headliners in the winter lineup, alongside Frieren and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. In general, fans praise its cinematic visuals and compelling storyline. However, many other anime offer the same, if not greater, thrilling combination. And for those who have been watching fantasy anime for years, these anime series easily stand above Sentenced to Be a Hero.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Features a Better Protagonist
Rimuru Tempest is a perfect example of a good fantasy and isekai protagonist. Unlike Xylo, Rimuru has a better personality, making it easier for fans to like him even if he’s in his slime form. Also, Rimuru has a creative and flexible power system that allows him to act independently without support, compared to Xylo, who needs to fight monsters with Teoritta by his side to finish the job.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also features an ever-expanding world, where different kinds of monsters and demons exist. The series doesn’t treat them as ordinary obstacles to Rimuru, like the demon blights that plagued Xylo’s world, but they make the world feel more alive with their involvement in complex societies, alliances, rivalries, and political structures in the series.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Offers Better Story
Sentenced to Be a Hero is often compared to Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, mostly due to the similarities in their aesthetics. Some fans even argued that Sentenced to be a Hero features a less problematic main character, with Xylo Forbartz not having any malicious tendencies, making him easier to root for compared to Rudeus Greyrat, who’s better known for his flawed personality and controversial actions.
At this point, however, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation has a much better fantasy story, with richer character development and a more compelling, immersive world. How the series uses and explores magic is one of its strongest points too. Most importantly, the story gets a lot less problematic as Rudeus matures, learns from his past mistakes, and grows into a more empathetic individual. In a nutshell, Mushoku Tensei depicts Rudeus getting a second chance at living a richer, more fulfilling life.
Humor and Cooking Make Delicious in Dungeon Better
Delicious in Dungeon is one of the most unique fantasy anime out there. It’s not all about action and suspense, with the main characters using their powers to save the day or getting isekai’d or reincarnated in a world dominated by magic.
Instead, the series integrates culinary creativity and character-driven humor into its dungeon-crawling adventure, turning monster hunting into a clever and delicious experience, something that Sentenced to Be a Hero lacks.
Make no mistake though, Delicious in Dungeon isn’t just about Laios and friends gathering together to eat a sumptuous meal, as the series evolves from a lighthearted culinary adventure into a darker, more intense dungeon journey.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Proves Subtle Is Better
Most fantasy anime, like Sentenced to Be a Hero, rely on intense battles, flashy magic, and high-stakes action to stand out. However, Frieren is different. Instead of relying on these typical fantasy elements, the anime takes a slow, reflective approach, focusing on the emotional journeys of the characters instead.
This may sound dull and boring, but Frieren proves that character experiences and quiet moments can be just as engaging. The story that goes beyond defeating the Demon King is also a unique take, showing how heroes cope with aging, loss, and the passage of time rather than moving immediately to the next battle like most anime and manga series in the same genre.

KonoSuba Keeps the Humor Coming
While Sentenced to be a Hero tries hard to be different from other fantasy anime, KonoSuba does this with ease, using over-the-top humor, hilarious characters, and absurd situations to subvert typical fantasy and isekai tropes effortlessly. The best part is that KonoSuba is so well-animated that every exaggerated expression and comedic gag lands perfectly on-screen, making slapstick moments even funnier.
That doesn’t mean KonoSuba is devoid of action, as the characters still face genuine challenges from monsters, dungeon hazards, and magical traps, blending thrilling adventure with nonstop humor.
The Twelve Kingdoms Brings a Wealth of Lore
Before anime became flooded with video game–style isekai, there was The Twelve Kingdoms, where an ordinary high school girl gets swept away in a new world that is rich with lore, forcing her to adapt quickly to political intrigue, cultural differences, and the harsh realities of her new world against her will.
Youko Nakajima is an incredibly relatable isekai protagonist who, at first, will get on your nerves because of her constant whining but will soon win you over with her compelling transformation.
Twelve Kingdoms boasts not just a better story than Sentenced to be a Hero, but also a better main character that is relatable, flawed, and evolves meaningfully. Youko doesn’t need to be edgy like Xylo Forbartz or rely on forced cool traits to be interesting at all.
Ranking of Kings Is Harder to Resist
Just like Xylo, almost every character in Ranking of Kings looks down on Bojji, not because he’s a punished hero, but because of his physical limitations. He may be qualified to ascend by right of birth, yet everyone underestimates him due to his lack of strength and communicative limitations. However, those frailties are what make him more appealing than Xylo to the viewers.
After all, it’s rare for a fantasy adventure anime to have a main character who’s not exceptionally talented or gifted, making Bojji’s struggles and growth feel genuine and relatable. Watching Bojji go from an underestimated prince to a capable leader is a joy to witness.
