Key Takeaways
- Cody and Astor were phased out of the original Dexter series after Rita’s death.
- Dexter: Resurrection has a great opportunity to re-unite Dexter with all of his grown-up children.
- Dexter will be alive in Dexter: Resurrection, potentially reuniting with his step-children amid anger and resentment.
Dexter: Resurrection will continue Dexter Morgan’s story, with events picking up at the exact point where Dexter: New Blood ended. Filming will begin in January 2025, and the sequel series will debut on Paramount + with Showtime next summer. Michael C. Hall’s Dexter is the only confirmed return thus far, but there is the potential for other legacy characters to join him. Cody and Astor were Dexter’s stepchildren in the original Dexter series, but they haven’t been seen in years, and the sequel series could be the perfect time to bring them back, and re-unite them with their killer stepfather.
Cody and Astor were Rita Bennett’s children, and Harrison’s siblings, so their return to the Dexter-verse would make perfect sense. Dexter’s step-children are grown adults now, and when Dexter: Resurrection begins, they will finally be aware of who Dexter really was all those years, and like Harrison, they may track him down to seek answers about their mother’s death at the hands of the Trinity Killer.
Cody And Astor Were Phased Out Of The Original Dexter Series After Rita’s Death
Much is made about Dexter’s relationship with his teenage son, Harrison Morgan, in Dexter: New Blood, but the serial killer with a code also has two step-children with his late wife, Rita Bennett, but not much has been mentioned about Cody and Astor since the original series. After Rita was brutally murdered by the best villain in the Dexter series, Arthur ‘Trinity Killer’ Mitchell in season 4, Cody and Astor moved to Orlando, Florida with their grandparents, and Dexter wasn’t involved in their lives as much in the later seasons.
Dexter season 5 phased out Cody and Astor, but they did return in the season 7 episode titled ‘Argentina’ in 2012. There were tensions between Cody and Astor in this episode, with the latter in the midst of her problematic teenage years, and she was clearly still struggling with the death of her mother. It was revealed that Astor was smoking pot, and Dexter made a failed attempt to give her some advice. This was the last time the audience saw Cody and Astor in the Dexter-verse, and they were barely mentioned for the rest of the series’ run.
Dexter was close to both of his step-children, so it would feel odd if they didn’t resurface at some point in the future, especially as the truth about their mother’s death will come out in Dexter: Resurrection. Dexter felt a lot of guilt over what happened to Rita, and this should be explored further in the sequel series, and what better way to do that than bringing back her children in their adult years?
Dexter: Resurrection Has A Great Opportunity To Re-Unite Dexter With All Of His Grown-Up Children
Harrison Morgan fled Iron Lake after shooting his serial killer father, and his story will likely continue in Dexter: Resurrection. After the unpopular character, Hannah McKay, died, Harrison tracked Dexter down, but their relationship soured after he had a big problem with Coach Logan’s death. It’s quite possible that Harrison’s next plan in Dexter: Resurrection could be to track down his half-siblings, Cody and Astor. There was no mention of Harrison’s older brother and sister in Dexter: New Blood, which has created a lot of mystery over what happened to them.
Cody and Astor were much older than Harrison when their mother, Rita, died, so it would be interesting to see what effect this has had on their adult lives. The effects of Rita’s murder on Harrison were obvious, as he witnessed it, and this led to him forming his own dark passenger. Even if Cody and Astor don’t return in Dexter: Resurrection, it would feel right to get some update on what happened to them, as it’s been over a decade since they last appeared on-screen.
It would be an interesting plot point to catch up with Cody and Astor in Dexter: Resurrection, to see how they react to the shocking news about their stepfather. Their return could also see the iconic location of Miami re-appearing in the Dexter-verse, which would please many fans. Even though Cody and Astor moved to Orlando, Florida during season 5 of the original Dexter series, it is quite possible they could return to Miami as adults to feel closer to their slain mother and their roots.
Dexter will actually be alive in Dexter: Resurrection, so he could be re-united with his step-children, but if their paths do cross, it won’t be a happy family re-union, but it’s unlikely Cody and Astor would react as drastically as Harrison did towards his father. However, there would be a lot of anger and resentment towards Dexter, and it would be interesting to see this play out on screen. Dexter was partly responsible for the death of both of Cody and Astor’s parents, as their drug-addicted father, Paul, was set up by Dexter, and sent to prison where he was beaten to death. Having said that, it’s Rita’s death that will likely be focused on in Dexter: Resurrection, with Dexter’s connection to the Trinity Killer.
