After a sluggish and uneven year of sales so far, Tesla set a new record for deliveries in the third quarter with nearly half a million electric vehicles sold globally.
The automaker said on Thursday that it delivered 497,099 EVs between July and September this year, a 7.3% year-over-year increase and a new high for its EV sales.
The Model Y and the Model 3 accounted for the vast majority of these sales, as both EVs combined for 481,166 units delivered, which is more than 9% year-over-year growth, likely led by the Model Y as well as a last-minute sales rush in the U.S. ahead of the federal tax credit expiry on Sept. 30. Tesla does not release the production and delivery numbers for individual models.
Deliveries of its other models, which include the Cybertruck, Model X SUV and the Model S sedan, plummeted sharply compared to last year. These other models accounted for just 15,933 deliveries, a 30% year-over-year drop. The Model X and Model S also received a mild refresh this year.
