All types of players are looking for different things in their Star Wars video game experiences. Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world game wherein players take on the role of a young woman, Kay Vess, trying to make a name for herself in the underworld. There are virtually no Jedis to speak of and gameplay is largely based on stealth.
Star Wars Outlaws takes a different approach to gameplay than most Star Wars adaptations but it also falls prey to nostalgia meaning that there are a few cameos to make fans squeal with glee. They’re all handled pretty tastefully so let’s get to some of the best ones. There will be spoilers.
7 Temmin Wexley
An Unexpected Cameo From The New Trilogy
Temmin Wexley may look like a new character in Star Wars Outlaws. He will appear on Akiva and is one of the Experts players can recruit in Star Wars Outlaws to learn abilities from. Initially, Temmin is tasked with upgrading the Speeder so that players can go over bigger water surfaces.
For those that pay attention to names in the new trilogy starting with Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, Temmin is actually one of the pilots who assists Poe in the Rebel Alliance. He’s much older in the movies but the characters are in fact the same person. Interestingly, Ubisoft would include this relatively obscure character as a cameo but super fans usually get the best nods.
6 Jabba The Hutt
The OG Crime Lord
Jabba the Hutt is one of the cameos that was heavily previewed in trailers leading up to the release of the game. It makes sense given the period in Star Wars and the Hutt Cartel is one of the most well-known criminal organizations within the Star Wars canon. Alongside Jabba the Hutt is of course his pet, Salacious B. Crumb, and advisor, Bib Fortuna, along with familiar soldiers within his palace like the Gamorrean Guards and the Rancor which is one of the few bosses in the game.
Jabba the Hutt resides on Tatooine which is a planet he rarely leaves. Players will meet him through story missions and there are some side missions afterward too including a few jobs from Bib Fortuna specifically.
5 Han Solo
Too Early To Save A Fellow Outlaw
Within Jabba the Hutt’s palace is the prize possession he wins at the end of Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. Han Solo is there in all of his glory albeit frozen in carbonite. It’s more of an Easter Egg than a cameo since Han doesn’t interact with Kay and not much is given to his presence overall.
However, had this slab not been seen in the game, fans would have assuredly been upset. It’s one of the most tragic things that has happened to Han’s character and no one could ever imagine what it must be like to be stuck in stasis like that.
4 Lando Calrissian
An Expert In Gambling And Life
Lando Calrissian appears as an Expert in the game as well, framed as The High Roller of the bunch. To get him, players have to play a game of Kessel Sabacc in Star Wars Outlaws which is relatively simple depending on the difficulty settings players use in the options.
While he isn’t performed by Billy Dee Williams, his original actor from the films, Lindsay Owen Pierre brings his own gravitas to Lando that works. Behind the scenes, this mission eventually brings Kay into working for the Rebel Alliance again, mowing down Stormtroopers while waiting for Lando to appear. It’s a brief role physically but Lando’s skill tree is a welcome one in the Experts menu.
3 Boba Fett
An Easily Missable Cameo
Boba Fett is one of the easiest cameos to miss in Star Wars Outlaws and it happens during the mission Partners wherein Kay first breaks into Jabba the Hutt’s Palace. It’s a real sneaking mission that even Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid would have trouble with. That’s because players can’t use Nix as a gameplay option.
Challenge aside, players will eventually sneak into a vent to avoid detection. Through one of the vents, players can see Boba Fett clear as day talking to another person physically and then there is a hologram on the table. The whole scene plays out silently and Kay won’t even comment which is a real hidden Easter Egg.
2 Lady Qi’Ra
Crimson Dawn’s Femme Fatale Means Business
There are four Factions in Star Wars Outlaws including Crimson Dawn, The Hutt Cartell, The Pyke Syndicate, and The Ashiga Clan. Jabba the Hutt is a returning character, Gorak Palas and Queen Ashiga are new to the game, and Lady Qi’Ra is also a returning character. Most might have forgotten that this is a character that debuted first in a novel leading up to Solo: A Star Wars Story who then had a prominent role in said film. Lady Qi’Ra has deep ties to Han Solo as they used to be lovers until she was sold into slavery.
Eventually, she worked her way up through the criminal underground, became a part of Crimson Dawn, worked under Darth Maul, and then usurped power to become the big boss on top as seen in Star Wars Outlaws. Compared to the other crime lords, Lady Qi’Ra definitely commands a presence that rivals even Jabba the Hutt. She is not a two-bit criminal as she is playing the game and playing it well. If players choose to side with Crimson Dawn throughout the game, they will be rewarded handsomely and it almost feels like this is the proper canon choice for Star Wars Outlaws.
1 Darth Vader
A Quick But Power Demonstration Of His Power
Darth Vader was a surprise along with Boba Fett although the recent video games have tried to shoe him in where needed. The finale of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order comes to mind. Still, it was a treat in Star Wars Outlaws as Darth Vader is used well. He appears in the final ring of missions wherein Kay witnesses a scene between him and Sliro Barsha. It’s at this point that Kay realizes Sliro has been in disguise this whole time as a big-time crime boss when in reality he was part of the Empire all along.
Darth Vader is at his wit’s end with Sliro who has not found any Rebels yet which causes him to shatter glass and point all shards at Sliro threateningly. Darth Vader has one more scene in the actual final mission but only as a hologram. What makes this whole thing effective is Kay’s bewilderment, as she has no idea who Darth Vader is or even what a Jedi or The Force is. It’s a reminder of where the “normal” people of the galaxy are when it comes to all of this Jedi dilemma.
