Zero-Base Thinking, green manufacturing milestones, and a push to eliminate plastics by 2030 are the hallmarks of ifs 25 years in India.
Bengaluru, 8th June 2025 :Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian subsidiary of the Japanese auto giant, has launched its annual Environment Month with a renewed sustainability initiative focused on “Zero-Base Thinking.” This approach encourages a fundamental reevaluation of resource usage to achieve long-term efficiency.

The theme for 2025, “Sustainable Resource Management Drive,” aligns with Toyota’s global Environmental Challenge 2050 and its broader commitment to carbon neutrality and circular economy practices. The campaign aims to embed sustainability not only in manufacturing processes but also throughout the company’s supply chain, including suppliers, dealers, and local communities.

“Environment Month is more than just a calendar event; it’s a platform to challenge the status quo,” said B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President and Director of Manufacturing at TKM. “Zero-Base Thinking encourages us to examine every resource and habit and ask: Does this add long-term value? If not, we need to rethink it.”
The launch coincides with TKM’s 25th anniversary of operations in India, using this milestone to showcase its green achievements under the theme “Journey to Green @ 25.”
The company reports that 100% of the grid electricity used in its manufacturing operations now comes from renewable sources. More than 89% of its water needs are met through rainwater harvesting and recycled water. Additionally, the waste recyclability rate at its Bidadi facility near Bengaluru has reached 96%, reflecting years of optimized processes.

Toyota’s sustainability efforts extend beyond its manufacturing sites. A 25-acre “Ecozone” learning center established by TKM has welcomed over 42,000 students and stakeholders, providing hands-on environmental education through interactive exhibits and theme parks. This initiative is part of TKM’s broader strategy to promote ecological awareness from an early age throughout society.
This year’s Environment Month activities are coordinated under the “TKM Sustainable Hub 2025,” which includes interactive initiatives such as a Green Expo organized by students from the Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI), a Wealth from Waste upcycling showcase by schoolchildren, and exhibitions of green products and sustainable technologies, including solar cookers and e-bikes.

Toyota is also making significant efforts to eliminate plastic from its supply chain. The company aims for zero plastic packaging by 2030, with interim goals that include a 5% reduction in parts packaging and a complete ban on single-use plastics—such as bottles, covers, and cutlery—by July 2025.

Other initiatives include the promotion of upcycled products, such as tissue paper, copier sheets, and bags, as well as afforestation drives at company premises and supplier sites. Community outreach efforts are expanding to government schools, ITIs, and local institutions to raise awareness about sustainable living.
TKM plans to recognize outstanding contributions from employees and ecosystem partners during the month-long campaign, reinforcing the belief that environmental transformation requires collaboration at all levels.
As automakers worldwide strive to meet carbon reduction targets, Toyota’s Indian arm is intensifying its focus on process innovation and grassroots education—positioning itself not only as a vehicle manufacturer but also as a long-term steward of sustainability in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
