Fans of this beloved monster and those who will be hunting it for the first time will have to adapt to its new fighting mechanics. In order to begin hunting Lagiacrus, you must be at least HR 31 before accepting the quest from Erik in the Scarlet Forest base camp. That will start a linear mission that results in a capture quest for a High-Rank Lagiacrus. After completing it, you will have an optional quest available for a regular Lagiacrus hunt. It will randomly appear in the Scarlet Forest in either a regular or Tempered form. Upon discovering it in the wild, you can either hunt it when you see it in the open world or save it as an Investigation to pursue later.

Lagiacrus is a classic leviathan monster from previous Monster Hunter games, meaning some moves will be familiar to those who have hunted this monster in the past. Its weaker attacks come in the form of quick linear chomping attacks, tail swipes, small lightning projectiles, and a hip-check that takes advantage of Lagiacrus’ linear body type. When using weapons with perfect guards, evades, or parries, these are great moves to take advantage of. Offset attacks are also a great choice, as getting the advantage on this monster early before its larger moves come out can make the difference in a hunt.

As Lagiacrus becomes enraged, it will start to use its lightning attacks more often. Its two staple moves are a slithering attack and a lightning eruption that can deal massive damage if you’re not careful. The slithering attack propels Lagiacrus forward in a straight line, knocking down anything in its path. How enraged it is will determine how many times Lagiacrus will do this attack in succession. The sequence of moves can even end in a smaller eruption attack that deals damage in a radius wherever it decides to end its slithering attack. Of all its moves, the eruption attacks are the deadliest. Lagiacrus tends to move around a lot when fighting, but it will slow things down right as it is about to do an eruption attack and curl into itself to release its energy. It can do a smaller scale eruption attack that damages targets within relatively close range of it and a larger attack that will emit three waves of electricity from its body that all land in scattered places from a much greater range.

To counter the slithering attacks, the best options are to either dive out of the way or use a perfect dodge move like Dual Blades or Bow make use of. Perfect guard attacks can be useful if Lagiacrus only does a slithering attack once, but will still leave you in a dangerous position if it decides to come back around. The same can be said for offset attacks, unless you manage to engage in a power clash by doing so, which is not always guaranteed. Setting traps in the path of these attacks can be a great way to stop Lagiacrus’ momentum and give you a good opening. To counter the eruption attacks, it is best to keep a safe distance and wait for the damage sequence to be over. Perfect guarding can prevent initial damage, but can lock you into a staggered guard state that can severely decrease your stamina meter and still do damage to you as the following lightning strikes hit. The safest strategy against these attacks is to wait for them to end before attacking, as there is a decent window where Lagiacrus will recover before attacking again. Specifically, after the larger eruption attack, Lagiacrus will have a temporary wound on its back that you can use a Focus Strike on to deal even more damage and possibly get a larger damage window.

Underwater

Similar to its first appearance in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Lagiacrus has an underwater combat sequence in Monster Hunter Wilds. This removes all your weapon;s attributes and makes you focus on dodging attacks in the water and interacting with the environment to inflict damage to Lagiacrus. While underwater, you have a dodge motion and the ability to swim up or down. If you hold the left trigger on Xbox or L2 on PlayStation, you will be able to swim freely at varying altitudes in the water. This is the best way to move through the water, as it keeps your head on a swivel to make sure you have eyes on Lagiacrus at all times, and it lets you move more freely.

In this section, there are two rock structures that you can bring down on Lagiacrus. The first one can be brought down as soon as you enter the water if you are quick enough. Doing so will leave Lagiacrus in a stunned state. The second one can be found behind your entry point in the corner.

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Lagiacrus Fight Should Only Be the Tip of the Iceberg

Title Update 2 added the throwback aquatic beast Lagiacrus to Monster Hunter Wilds, but its main mechanic shouldn’t be exclusive to it.

Players can use their grapple hook to attach onto the monster, similarly to how they would attach to a wound. From there, you can do light attacks with your knife or a weapon attack that takes longer to complete, but deals more damage. Wounds can still be inflicted underwater, so attaching yourself to Lagiacrus whenever you see one can stun it at any time. The monster will also create a temporary wound after doing its projectile attack, similarly to the one it does on land.

If you inflict enough damage to Lagiacrus while underwater, the player who deals the final blow will be put into an animated sequence that unleashes one final attack on the monster. If it is done on the left-hand side of the underwater area, you will send it propelled into a spikey structure that deals even more damage and sends Lagiacrus back up to the surface in a stunned state. This leaves it wide open to any attacks. If this animated sequence is done anywhere else underwater, it will just do some initial damage and send Lagiacrus back to the surface. If you do not do enough damage to Lagiacrus, it will cause this enormous supernova attack that can even damage players outside the water. If that happens, put as much distance between you and Lagiacrus as possible. Even if that means diving deeper into the water, do not resurface until the attack is over.
