Thanks to ongoing support from developers, these Final Fantasy games had more to offer even after their initial release.

Boss fights are an integral part of every Final Fantasy game, and some players may enjoy the ambition of some of these encounters based on how they’re structured. Sometimes, players must endure a boss rush that can be overbearing, which is why it’s such a satisfying moment when players finally take out these tough foes in quick succession.

8 Special Matches In The Battle Square

A Super-Powered Cloud Faces Off Against A Series Of Tough Enemies

The Battle Square of the Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy 7

    Released
    January 31, 1997

    OpenCritic Rating
    Strong

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest video games ever made, with the sheer amount of optional content being mind-blowing to this day. The Gold Saucer is a hub of minigames and optional content that players will love to uncover, with the Battle Square being a notable highlight.

Players acquire Cloud’s ultimate Limit Break and the W-Summon materia from here, and a party that obtains both these things along with Ultima Weapon can unlock a Special Match. This includes eight rounds against the toughest enemies in the Battle Saucer along with bosses from the main story, making for a ruthless Boss Rush that players must conquer to acquire the Final Attack materia.

    7 Cloister Of The Dead

A Trial Where Players Fight A Set Of Five Bosses At A Time

Cloister of the Dead in Final Fantasy 5

    Released
    December 6, 1992

    OpenCritic Rating
    Mighty

Final Fantasy 5‘s re-releases include additional content that players will have a ton of fun uncovering, with the Sealed Cave serving as a hub for the game’s strongest bosses, including Enuo. This superboss is the toughest challenge in Final Fantasy 5, and players who manage to beat this foe unlock another challenge mode that revolves around boss rushes.

Players must face off against six sets of five bosses each, testing a player’s mettle and survivability with each encounter. To make things tougher, these bosses are tougher versions of the ones that players have already faced before, ensuring that the party will face a significant challenge with each one of these foes regardless of their level.

    6 The Seven-Boss Finale

A Bombastic Way To End The First Game In The Remake Trilogy

    Systems

    PlayStation-1

    Released
    April 10, 2020

    Developer(s)
    Square Enix Business Division 1

    OpenCritic Rating
    Mighty

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a game that goes all-out on spectacle, which can be rather overbearing at times because of how lengthy these encounters are. However, the cinematic nature of these bosses can be fitting if positioned properly, and such is the case when players reach the finale of this title.

8 Best Coming Of Age Stories In Final Fantasy

After going on a thrilling adventure with their party, these Final Fantasy characters grew and matured on a personal level.

It may not be a boss rush in the truest sense, but the sheer number of climactic battles players are bombarded with at the finale deserve a mention. Swordipede and Jenova Dreamweaver must be dealt with before Cloud’s solo duel against Rufus and Darkstar while the rest of the party takes on The Arsenal in the iconic lift battle. This is followed by a motorcycle section where players must fight M.O.T.O.R. Originally, the boss fights end here as players escape Midgar, but Remake has to one-up the original title given that the title ends here. This is why players are subsequently bombarded with battles against super-powered Whispers before eventually taking on Sephiroth in an incredible final boss fight.

5 Phase 10 Of The Soul Shrine

Players Must Defeat The Legendary Dragons In One Go Before Unlocking The Fight Against Kaiser Dragon

Soul Shrine in Final Fantasy 6

    Final Fantasy 6

    Released
    October 11, 1994

    Developer(s)
    Square Enix , Square

    OpenCritic Rating
    Mighty

The updated release of Final Fantasy 6 comes bundled with additional content that’s a joy to uncover. Completing the Dragon’s Den lets players access the Soul Shrine, another optional dungeon where players go through ten phases that consist of numerous consecutive battles.

The final one is easily the hardest one of the bunch, with players having to take out all nine dragons they fought in the Dragon’s Den, including the dreaded Kaiser Dragon. Players who manage to get over this final hurdle can establish themselves as masters of Final Fantasy 6.

4 The Elemental Archfiends In The Giant Of Babil

The Four Fiends Try To Stop The Party In A Cinematic Boss Rush Battle

The Giant of Babil in Final Fantasy 5

    Final Fantasy 4

    Released
    July 19, 1991

    Developer(s)
    Square

    OpenCritic Rating
    Mighty

Final Fantasy 4 is a game full to the brim with epic set-pieces, including a memorable dungeon trek where players go inside the massive frame of the Giant of Babil and figure out a way to destroy this powerful threat from the inside. However, their quest isn’t as easy as they would’ve expected.

During their journey, the part is stopped in their tracks by the four Elemental Archfiends who were resurrected by Zemus. This leads to a boss rush with all four fiends, with Rubicante being the only one noble enough to heal Cecil and Co. before pouncing on them in this tough and grueling battle.

3 The Final Battles To Save Spira

After Defeating Braska’s Final Aeon, The Heroes Defeat The Aeons And Stop Yu Yevon Once And For All

    Systems

    PlayStation-1

    Released
    December 17, 2001

    OpenCritic Rating
    Strong

The finale of Final Fantasy 10 is about as cinematic as fans would expect, with players uncovering the truth behind Sin’s creation and infiltrating this beast to save Spira from this cycle of destruction once and for all. This is easier said than done, especially since players must face off against Braska’s Final Aeon, the final point in the game where players can die in combat.

The quality of dialogue in a Final Fantasy game is imperative to its success. These games stand out as having the best dialogue in the franchise.

After this moment, players face off against all the Aeons and Yu Yevon, with the party enjoying the benefits of Auto-Life to ensure that they can’t die in this battle. It may take away from the epic nature of this battle but is still a memorable way to say farewell to the brilliance of Final Fantasy 10.

2 The Final Fight Against Ultimecia

One Of The Most Cinematic Final Boss Fights In The Series

    Released
    February 11, 1999

    OpenCritic Rating
    Strong

Final Fantasy 8 may have its fair share of problems, but fans can’t deny that the final boss fight against Ultimecia is one of the most cinematic encounters in the series. The battle starts against Ultimecia, who will take away any party member who has been KO’d for too long.

After this, Griever appears and eventually fuses with Ultimecia after his form is defeated. Once these enemies are defeated, Ultimecia unveils her final form and engages the party in an epic boss encounter where players must brave her tough attacks and unleash their strongest abilities to complete Final Fantasy 8 once and for all.

1 Ascending The Statue Of The Gods Before Fighting Kefka

Players Must Ascend To The Heavens And Defeat Kefka For Good

    Final Fantasy 6

    Released
    October 11, 1994

    Developer(s)
    Square Enix , Square

    OpenCritic Rating
    Mighty

Finally heading to Kefka’s Tower after acquiring the strength needed to take on this final boss is one of the most satisfying moments in the entire series. Taking out the Warring Triad and using all three parties to reach the very top lets players take on Kefka in a battle for the ages.

This boss feels like a biblical battle come to life, with players slowly ascending to the heavens while taking out the various forms of the Statue of the Gods that try to prevent them from reaching this goal. Once Kefka appears as an angel from the heavens, the music kicks it up a notch as players initiate a battle to save the entire world from this mad jester’s tyranny.
