    • Actor Giancarlo Esposito is doing reshoots for Captain America: Brave New World.
    • Esposito said his MCU debut was made possible due to fan casting.
    • Reshoots are common in big Hollywood productions, including Marvel films, to enhance various elements.

Captain America: Brave New World is doing reshoots three months away from its release date. One actor said he was among those who needed to do some reshoots.

Giancarlo Esposito is among the newest faces Marvel fans will see in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. He will be playing Sidewinder, one of the supervillains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Better Call Saul actor recently shared that he was headed for another round of reshoots for his first MCU movie.

Captain America: Brave New World Star Giancarlo Esposito Claims No One Has Guessed His Character Yet

Giancarlo Esposito reacted to the various rumors about his character in Captain America: Brave New World, saying none of the guesses were right.

In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, Esposito spoke about his MCU debut when he appeared for a speaking engagement at Penn State University on November 7. He proudly shared about his character, saying, “[Sidewinder] is a badass, and I’m so excited for this piece,” before sharing that they were doing reshoots for the anticipated superhero movie. “The Captain America story, as much as it’s been great to be on set, to shoot it – I’m actually going back to do a little bit more. So excited! I get to put that costume on again, baby!” he continued. Esposito also acknowledged his fans for making it possible for him to join the MCU. According to him, “it all happened, out of fan casting.”

When Marvel dropped the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, fans immediately shared their various theories about Esposito’s character since it wasn’t named at the time. However, according to the actor, the speculations about his character were wrong because “no one has guessed correctly yet.” So, he shared some hints about his MCU character and how he felt during filming. “The character I’m playing is a badass. That always excites me. For me to develop that character in line with the character’s inception is a fascinating art for me. I had an incredible time shooting it. I’m not telling you who I’m playing,” he added. Weeks after the interview, Esposito finally named his MCU character when he appeared at the San Diego Comic-Con, and the announcement went viral on social media. “I can say, I am, Can I say it? I can say it, wow! I can finally unleash it! I am the King of the Serpent Society. I am Sidewinder!” he shared.

Reshoots are not new to big-budget major Hollywood productions, including Marvel movies. For instance, The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Black Widow (2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (2023) all did reshoots before their release dates. Among the reasons they did reshoots were to add humor to the film and balance the darker tone and lightheartedness, address pacing issues and enhance action scenes, and highlight some characters’ presence. For instance, Ant-Man 3 did reshoots to adjust the plot points and give Kang the Conqueror more scenes to solidify the character as a huge threat to the future MCU phases. The next Avengers movies were supposed to focus on Kang the Conqueror, who was portrayed by Jonathan Majors. However, Marvel fired Majors and scrapped his lined-up MCU movies following his conviction of two domestic violence charges. Avengers 5 was initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but it had been changed to Avengers: Doomsday with the introduction of Robert Downey Jr., this time not as the beloved Iron Man, but as supervillain Doctor Doom.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
