Grab Attacks, or Throws, are an essential element of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero‘s combat system. Using them at the right time can help you get through enemy guards and deal some damage. Since they launch your opponent, they can also be used to set them up for a Super or Ultimate Attack, forcing them to perfectly time a vanish if they hope to escape.

Knowing when and how to execute a Throw is crucial in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. When paired with vanishes you can perform some incredibly fun combos and really dish out some damage. This guide will explain how to grab, discuss some of the unique mechanics associated with throws, and talk about a few basic combos you can perform using grabs. The video above shows the Throw Tutorial the game offers and then shows off some of the more unique grabs the game’s cast has to offer.

The Z Burst Dash is a powerful movement tool in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, allowing you to dash behind your opponent near-instantly.

Luckily, performing a Throw in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is pretty easy. You just have to hold the block button and hit the Rush Attack Button.

Here are the button inputs for performing a Throw:

Grab attacks can’t be blocked, making them ideal for dealing damage to a blocking enemy, and they also launch your opponent away. You can also Grab enemies that are downed to continue dealing some damage to them. Grabs can be countered using Super Perception, or avoided by Vanishing, and since they’re slower than normal Rush Attacks, they can also be interrupted if you are attacked while executing them.

One way you can extend your combo after landing a Throw is by performing a Super or Ultimate Attack. Since your enemy will be flying through the air following a successful Throw, they’ll have a much harder time evading your Super Attack and will have to perfectly time a Vanish to avoid the attack. (In my experience, Beam and Blast Supers are harder to time Vanishes for than Melee Supers, since they tend to travel to your opponent more quickly.)

Generally, you’ll want to use Grabs against enemies that are blocking, or against enemies that are on the ground following one of your attacks. These are the best times to execute a grab, though you can also Vanish, or Z-Burst Dash, behind an enemy and then use a Grab as an easy setup for your Super and Ultimate Attacks.

Certain characters have unique grab animations when up against certain opponents, usually as references to attacks they used in the Anime or Manga. For example, Toppo has a unique grab animation against Freiza that references their fight in the Tournament of Power. These special grabs do a little more damage than the normal throws, as an extra incentive to seek them out, and Whis’ Stamp Book offers rewards for finding them
