Ciri is one of the most popular characters in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, and many fans have been hoping for a game where she’s the lead character. Unfortunately, one of the reasons why this has been impossible in the past is because of the extent of Ciri’s powers. Thanks to her Elder blood, Ciri is one of the most powerful characters in The Witcher 3, and has the ability to travel between dimensions.
Traveling to different locations used to pose a problem in video games, as they would often require loading screens in the transition. A game that used Ciri’s interdimensional abilities would have struggled with heavy use of loading screens and rendering in the past, but Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart uses a similar concept that seamlessly moves the characters across settings. This is a great indication that video game hardware might finally be ready for a game in The Witcher series that puts Ciri in the spotlight, and that makes full use of her abilities.
Ciri’s Abilities to Travel Through Dimensions in The Witcher
Video game hardware in the past was simply unable to give Ciri’s interdimensional travel the justice it deserves, but Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart features liberal use of interdimensional travel, and proves that video game technology may finally have reached the level it needs for Ciri to take the spotlight. Interdimensional travel is a highlight of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and features dimension hopping without the use of loading screens, which would slow down the pacing and make the game very frustrating to play.
Ciri’s Elder Blood gifts her with incredible magic that makes her unique. Her ability to travel across dimensions is the reason behind her moniker “The Lady of Space and Time.” While her role as a possible player character has a lot of potential because of her magic, it’s also because of her abilities that she hasn’t been able to stand in the spotlight. Interdimensional travel, as Ciri experiences, would be difficult to depict with previous technology, as she can travel through space within the blink of an eye and with very little effort.
Interdimensional Travel in The Witcher Series Could Be Expanded Upon
Ciri takes the role of the player character for sections of The Witcher 3 that are required to tell her story, but she doesn’t use her interdimensional travel abilities within these sections for narrative reasons. These gameplay sections are very short, and even when she does use her power, it’s only in cutscenes to travel across space, rather than dimensions. Nevertheless, her magic is still shown to be powerful, with her dashes making her incredibly fast, which makes up for not having the same strength as a mutated witcher.
Interdimensional travel had a lot of potential in The Witcher 3, and there are mentions of it several times throughout the game. Geralt travels through multiple dimensions with Avallac’h, which takes a great amount of effort. Interdimensional travel is again mentioned once by Ciri, and depicted again in the Hearts of Stone expansion pack. Ciri speaks to Geralt about her travels across dimensions while running from the Wild Hunt, and Geralt enters the world of a painting in Hearts of Stone, possibly enters a world constructed by Gaunter O’Dimm, then banishes him to another plane of existence at the conclusion of the expansion pack.
